Easy guidelines for Aged Care

The Aged Care industry is funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia and as a result is also regulated by various government departments. Samarinda Ashburton Aged Services (SAAS) has been awarded the status of provider of residential aged care, community and flexible care.

ACAT & ACAR assessment

For an individual to enter a residential Aged Care facility, he or she is required to be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). A referral to an ACAT team can be made by the individual's GP or requested by a relative. An assessment may take up to 6 weeks depending on the team. Our care recipients are usually assessed by, but not restricted to, the following ACAT teams in the Ashburton region:

  • St Georges Aged Care Assessment Services PH 9268 0566
  • St Vincents Aged Care Assessment Services PH 9816 0566
  • Peter James Aged Care Assessment Services PH 9881 1875

Following the assessment, the team will issue an Aged Care Assessment Record (ACAR) which will indicate the level of care required as well as the type of residential care needed. This could be respite, permanent and quite often both.

SAAS will be able to claim appropriate subsidies from the Australian Government according to the level of care indicated by the ACAR. This will go towards the total cost of care needed to provide quality assistance and support for the care recipient.

Asset Assessment

In order to determine the amount of contribution required by each care recipient, Aged Care providers including SAAS will need to view an individual Asset Assessment which may be obtained via Centrelink. The documentation required for this assessment will be provided by the ACAS Team. SAAS is also able to provide you with this documentation if required. This may also take up to 6 weeks. The following contributions may be asked to be paid:

  • Daily care fee
  • Daily income tested fee
  • Daily accommodation charge or;
  • Accommodation charge as a bond (lump sum).

The daily care fee, daily accommodation charge and the daily income tested fee change every 6 months as per Schedule of Residents Fees and Charges. Further information will be provided at the time of the tour regarding SAAS's maximum bond.

Once SAAS has received the required documentation, care recipients may follow the respective admission processes for the residential care facility.

Changes as of 1st July 2014

If you or a family member is planning to enter aged care from 1st July 2014, fees and charges have been changed in accordance with the aged care reforms. We encourage you to visit the Australian Government Department of Social Services website to keep informed of aged care reforms being implemented over the next 10 years.
